Staff and Board Directors (Cinevolution Media Arts)

Staff 

Sun Gill  (Director’s Assistant / Video Production) 

Sun Gill is a promising young filmmaker. His films have been enthusiastically received at competitions, winning awards and funding for future projects. His experience in production has also allowed him to play a leading role in the Audio Visual Department of an independent South Asian broadcaster. Sun is working with the festival to compile this year’s media and assist with publicity.

Ying Wang   (Chair / Festival Director)

Ying came to Canada in 1996. After being enrolled in a graduate program at the UBC Department of Asian Studies for several years, Ying left school and became a self-taught filmmaker. Her first feature film, Sisters, has been shown at festivals and collected by public libraries. Ying is also the founder and producer of gYu Films, a production company focusing on cross-cultural stories. Currently, she is completing her first feature-length documentary. Ying received her BA degree in Literature in China, where she worked as a journalist, editor and photographer for over 5 years. 
 

lynn2Lynn Chen   (Vice Chair / Chief Graphic Designer / Art Director)

Lynn is one of the founders of the society, and is serving as Vice Chair this year. She is an outstanding graduate from Emily Carr University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Design. She has been the chief graphic designer of this society since 2008. In 2009, she redesigned the branding of the New Asia Film Festival. She feels that through film, we are able to learn from the experiences of others: It’s a place to bring our minds to wonder.

Su Jian Ping   (Director / Production & Technical Support)

Jian Ping has been living and working in Vancouver since 1997. A graduate of Simon Fraser University, he was the founder of AsOne Studio, a student filmmaking organization in the university. He has extensive experience in both filmmaking and broadcasting works. He believes that film can serve as a bridge that connects all ethnic groups and helps us to understand one another. Jian Ping is currently working at the Shaw TV Station in Vancouver.

Jeannie Lo   (Director / Coordinator)

Jeannie is helping with fundraising initiatives, as well as maintaining the membership database. Jeannie is passionate about volunteering and can be seen frequently at many events throughout the Lower Mainland.       

 

chenDanny Chen   (Vice Chair / Community Outreach)

Danny has a Master’s degree of Science. He has over 18 years of management & professional experience in Canada, USA and China. Through his work, he has gained a strong knowledge of multicultural business, cultural awareness of Western and Eastern cultures. Being bilingual, he is able to facilitate communications between corporate groups. Danny believes film is a good bridge between people’s hearts, and helps people discover other worlds.


Winnie Rong Pan   (Director / Treasurer) 

Winnie holds a B.A. Degree in Chinese Language & Literature and worked as a magazine editor and free-lance writer in China for many years. Settling down in Vancouver in 1997, Winnie later received a diploma in Payroll and Accounting Administration and is currently working as an accounting administrator at local industrial companies.

  

Bryan Melvin   (Director) 

Bryan passionately believes that film is a medium which can open hearts and minds. His interest in film began as a student at the University of British Columbia, from which he graduated with a BA in East Asian History. Following a career in marketing, he has turned to giving back to the community. He teaches English to recent immigrants and works part-time at the Richmond Art Gallery. When not busy with volunteering, Bryan is behind the camera photographing his favourite subject: Chinese tea pots. He is attempting to write a novel in Chinese and acknowledges it may forever be a work in progress.

Joanna Wang   (Director / Secretary)

Joanna studied commercial graphic design and has been working as a graphic designer for several years. She also has experience in filmmaking and acting. Besides having a strong passion for film, she enjoys planting, and has also traveled extensively to areas as far away as Tibet and the Arctic Circle.
 

Cheryl Lee   (Director / Communications)

Cheryl holds a B.A. in English and International Relations. She is an educator experienced both locally and overseas. Her background in music and interest in cultural arts lead to her involvement within the creative arts sector. With the Cinevolution Media Arts Society, she is working to extend the reach and accessibility of the festival. This includes overseeing program initiatives to further develop interactive opportunities extended toward youth groups and the wider community.
